FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q I'm interested in sclerotherapy but am concerned about the recovery time involved. How long does the treatment take, and how long should I expect to be out of work?

A. You won't need to be out of work at all. Treatment time usually lasts between twenty to thirty minutes. Patients can walk out of the Center and resume their regular activities immediately afterwards.

Q. How painful is the injection?

A. The injection used in the sclerotherapy procedure is virtually painless. Some describe it as a feeling like a pinprick or mosquito bite.

Q. Are varicose veins inherited?

A. Family history has a lot to do with whether or not you develop varicose veins.

Q. What can I do to prevent varicose veins?

A. Minimize your risk factors, such as weight gain and hormonal therapy.

Q. I'm pregnant and the pain from my varicose veins is awful. Can I be treated now?

A. Injection and surgical treatment during pregnancy and lactation is not recommended. The use of support stockings, however, provides an effective alternative. We, at the Vein Care Program, can work in conjunction with your obstetrician in developing a course of treatment that can help alleviate the swelling and discomfort associated with varicose veins during pregnancy.

Q. Is the treatment of spider and varicose veins just for women?

A. Absolutely not. One in every eight people suffers from some kind of venous disorder that requires treatment, and sometimes those afflicted are men. Older women and older men are especially susceptible to the symptomatic problems associated with varicose veins. The Vein Care Program encourages both men and women to call us with questions and to come in for a diagnostic check-up.
